How the League Works
The season at a glance
| Weeks | What happens |
| 1-3 | Placement. Every team plays 3 games, and the results sort everyone into three divisions. |
| 4-5 | Division play, round 1. You play inside your division. |
| after wk 5 | The move. One team goes up and one comes down at each division line. |
| 6-7 | Division play, round 2. Now-settled divisions play to set the playoff order. |
| 8-9 | Playoffs. Semifinals, then finals. Three champions. |
You’re guaranteed all nine weeks. Nobody gets knocked out,
1. How placement works (weeks 1 to 3)
Everybody starts in the same pool. Over the first three weeks, your team plays three games against three different opponents. We set those matchups ahead of time and spread them out, so nobody gets a brutal draw or a free ride.
You might play a more advanced team or a more rec level team one during these weeks. That’s fine, and it’s the whole idea. We’re figuring out where everyone stands. Once the divisions are set, you’ll only play teams around your own level.
2. How the divisions are split
When the three weeks are done, we rank every team from top to bottom. This is the order we use:
- Wins
- Goal differential (goals you scored minus goals you gave up)
- Head to head, if the tied teams actually played each other
- Goals scored
- A coin flip, if two teams are somehow still dead even
Then we cut the list into three groups of four:
- Division A: the top four, our most competitive group
- Division B: the middle four
- Division C: the next four, our most laid-back group
If two teams are tied right on a dividing line, fourth and fifth or eighth and ninth, we use that same list to break it. None of this is about labeling anyone. It’s just how we get you games that are actually worth showing up for.
3. How teams move up and down
This is the part that keeps things fair. If those first three weeks put your team in the wrong spot, the mid-season move sorts it out.
Weeks 4 and 5 are the first round of division play. In your group, you play two of your group. We arrange it so the top two teams face off and the bottom two face off, which makes it clear who’s earned a move.
After week 5, one team moves at each line between divisions:
- Division A’s last-place team drops to B, and Division B’s first-place team goes up to A.
- Division B’s last-place team drops to C, and Division C’s first-place team goes up to B.
Every division still has four teams when the dust settles, and no team ever jumps more than one level. The best team in A and the last team in C stay put, since there’s nowhere above A or below C to go. We use the same tiebreakers here: wins, then goal differential, then head to head, then goals.
Weeks 6 and 7 are the second round. Your division is settled now, so we re-rank the four of you and you play another short round robin. Those results decide the playoff order.
4. Playoffs (weeks 8 and 9)
After week 7, we seed each division one through four based on that second round of games, using the usual tiebreakers.
- Week 8 is semifinals. First plays fourth, second plays third.
- Week 9 is finals. The two winners play for the division title, and the two with loses play for third.
Every division runs its playoff at the same time, so we finish the year with three champions, one from each level.
5. Tiebreakers, start to finish
Any time two teams are even, whether it’s for placement, a move, or a playoff seed, we work down this list until something separates them:
- Wins
- Goal differential, meaning total goals scored minus total goals allowed
- Head to head, the result when the two teams played each other
- Goals scored
- A coin flip, done in front of both captains if it ever comes to that
6. What if we don’t have exactly 12 teams?
We built this around 12 teams, which splits cleanly into three divisions of four. But it bends to fit whatever we end up with. A few things stay true no matter the number:
- You still play every week (byes are covered just below).
- Moving up and down works the same way. Last place in a division drops, and first place in the division below rises.
- We post the exact setup as soon as registration closes, so you’ll know your group before the first week is over.
Byes, for odd numbers. If a division ends up with an odd number of teams, one team sits out each week. We rotate the bye so nobody sits more than anyone else, and a bye doesn’t count as a win or a loss. When teams have played a different number of games, we compare them by win rate rather than raw totals, so sitting out a week never helps or hurts you.
7. Quick answers
Do we pick our division? No. Your placement games decide it, and that’s what keeps every division competitive.
What if we get placed too high or too low? We’ll do our best to place you in the right beginning group, but that’s what the mid-season move is for. Win your way up, or settle into a group where your games stay close.
Do we end up playing the same teams over and over? You’ll see your division-mates more than once, and that’s normal. Moving up or down also throws new opponents into the mix.
Does anyone get knocked out? Never. Every team plays all nine weeks, playoffs included. The playoffs just decide where you finish inside your division.
Can we win something even if we’re not the best team out there? Absolutely. That’s the reason for three divisions. Each one crowns a champion at the end of the season.
How do we find out our matchups? Weeks 1 through 3 are set before the season starts. From week 4 on, the games depend on results, so we post each week’s matchups once the previous week wraps up. We will do our best to have games posted 5 days in advance of your game.
